Consumers search for best gas prices

PHILADELPHIA - April 22, 2011

To put it in perspective, the price was $2.88 exactly one year ago. It's a good reason to go looking for the cheapest gas prices.

As the gas prices went up to $3.83 from $3.79 for a gallon of regular at a Hess station in Grays Ferry Hess, it was still a bargain to some consumers, given the average gas price in Philadelphia is now at $3.91.

"I can't believe it's a bargain," said Quinn Benyard. "It's a rip off!"

"Very ridiculous, I mean in a minute I'll be riding a bike," said Rise Perry.

"I live in Chester County, and I forgot to get gas this morning or I wouldn't be buying gas in Philadelphia," Perry said.

With prices soaring high and ticking closer or even pushing past $4.00, every cent counts.

Pat Gallelli feels lucky to live near the Drexel Hill Gulf where regular is $3.83 a gallon.

"I work in Ridley Park, and there gas went up 12 cents last week; a lot of money to pay for gas," said Pat Galleli.

$3.85 a gallon for regular at a full service Gulf in Norristown; the cheapest one driver could find, and it wasn't his first stop.

"I used one of these programs on my phone to help find the cheapest gas. A few blocks down it said it was like 30 cents cheaper, but when we got there it was 4 cents a gallon like everybody else," said Russ Frey.

Frey says he's going to take the opportunity to fill up before prices continue to climb, and will keep strategy in mind when they get behind the wheel like many other drivers.

"I'm on my way to New York, but I'm going to fill up in Jersey," said Frey.
