Drivers search for better mileage

April 23, 2011

Bill Jones and his wife were admiring their new car from within. They are trading in their SUV for a new 2012 Ford Focus they found at McCafferty Ford.

Jones says the car's looks and handling sold him, but the 34 highway MPG EPA also helped with their decision.

"It's a very important part of the decision making," said Bill Jones. "Driving SUV's and trucks is getting to be expensive in terms of gas consumption use and the price of gas."

It's a lament heard increasingly; the cost of a fill up.

Jim Kellerman is now spending $80 to $100 a week to fill up his V-8 pickup. He was checking out a new Chevy Cruze at Reedman-Toll. With an EPA estimate of 36 miles to the gallon on the highway, it's about twice as fuel efficient as Kellerman's truck.

"Between $80 and a $100 for a fill up," said Jim Kellerman.

Gas price numbers have buyers looking for higher mileage numbers, especially those who make significant daily commutes.

"I am hoping for about 32 on the highway," said Sharon Schleinkofor.

Not everyone can downsize. Jack Titlow has to have a full size truck, but can't ignore the price of gas.

"I thought about it, it's a consideration, but not enough of a consideration to change what I buy," said Jack Titlow.

But for dealers, some larger vehicles are more efficient compared to just 2 or 3 years ago. Some models use turbo chargers, some improved transmissions.

"They went from 4 speed to 5 speed to 6 speed transmissions, which burn less gas," said Jim Hughes, of Reedman-Toll.

Still in most cases size does matter, all things being equal the smaller and lighter the vehicle the better the mileage.

The colorful new Fiat's at Reedman-Toll boast 38 highway MPGs. Pam and Jim Danner intrigued.

"I think it's a fun car, and you could hop in and do something good for the environment," said Pam Danner.
