Man killed by police in Trenton identified

TRENTON, N.J. - April 25, 2011

31-year-old Corey Brown died after being hit by police gunfire in the 100 block of Frazier Street around 1:20 a.m.

According to police, officers arrived for a report of an assault in progress and found Brown walking from the area.

Police say that, after Brown spotted them, he placed his hand into his waistband as if he had a weapon and ignored commands to show his hands.

A woman approached Brown and tried to calm him down, police say, and Brown threw her to the ground. Investigators say Brown then raised his hand as if he had a gun and approached the officers, who fired.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police would not say how many shots were fired. Sgt. Tom McDonough told the Associated Press that no weapon was recovered.

Police say, as per policy, the New Jersey State Attorney General's Office has also been advised of the circumstances of this police-involved shooting.
