Parenting: Sacrifices parents make

April 26, 2011

It all starts before your child is born. Think of all the time spent at the doctor, prepping the nursery, planning, worrying, fretting, questioning. Painting, decorating, assembling – planning, waiting.

Then, he or she arrives and requires constant care - many times, while you are trying to sleep.

This little child begins learning to do all of the things you've been doing all of your life. Talking, walking, reading, eating. This baby looks to you to figure it all out.

And suddenly, this baby grows up. Wants to have a catch every waking hour of the day, or read that same book over and over again, or go for that long walk one more time, or just wants to be around you, be noticed, be with you.

All that time, all that money, all spent to allow the child to grow. And you never tabulated the entire amounts. Because you didn't look at it that way.

Why did you do it?

Well, it's hard to explain, you say.

But if you are a parent yourself, you know why.
