Suspect in DUI crash that killed boy, 9, in court

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - April 27, 2011

William Liepe, 58, of Mays Landing is accused of driving drunk on the afternoon of April 10th in Hamilton Township, causing a three-car crash.

9-year-old Ryan Schleyer was killed and two others were severely injured.

"The prosecutor said his blood alcohol was 1.9. That's like two and a half times the legal limit," said Ryan's father, Leonard.

As a judge reviewed the aggravated manslaughter and assault charges against Liepe the victim's mother, who held a picture of her son, cried and struggled for composure.

Ryan was with his friend, M.J. Guzman and M.J.'s father, Max, driving to a softball game on Cologne Ave. when they were hit. Both are still hospitalized.

"Doctors say, basically, every bone from his neck down is broken. He's had four surgeries already," Leonard Schleyer said.

A fund has been set up to help the Guzman's. Max had started a new job and was a week away from qualifying for health coverage when the crash occurred.

Liepe, who wore a neck brace in court, is being held on $350,000 bail.

If convicted on all charges Liepe faces up to 50 years in jail and a half million dollars in fines.
