Eastern Pennsylvania authorities say a melee in an Allentown convenience store injured six police officers, including one who was knocked unconscious.

Police said they made a routine stop at a Wawa store at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and saw a man throw a soda at a woman.

Officers said they tried to arrest him, but he threw one officer into a cooler, elbowed another and pushed a third into a doughnut stand where he hit his head and momentarily lost consciousness.

Police said additional officers arrived and helped arrest the suspect, using pepper spray and hitting him in the legs with their batons.

Police say about 200 onlookers surrounded the officers, some hurling taunts and throwing objects, in what officers described as a "near riot." No other arrests were made.
