Police: Amish infant dies when trapped in stroller

Police in central Pennsylvania say an Amish infant is dead after becoming entangled in a stroller that had been recalled last year.

State police in Ephrata say 6-month-old Alvin Mark Smucker died Monday after his mother put him down for a nap while the family attended an Amish gathering at a Lancaster County park.

Coroner Stephen Diamantoni tells the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era the unrestrained boy died of asphyxiation when his head became wedged against the cushion.

The child was in a model of stroller recalled in October over entrapment risk. Free repair kits were available but police said it was unclear if the boy's stroller had been repaired.

Police Cpl. Robert Courtright says the stroller had been bought at a yard sale and had a sticker describing proper use.
