North Phila. playground shooting victim dies

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - May 1, 2011

It happened around 11:45 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 27th and Clearfield streets.

When police arrived they found a man, who appeared to be around 30 years old, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and the side. He was rushed to Temple Hospital in extremely critical condition. Shortly after 9 p.m. word came from investigators that he had died from his injuries.

The other shooting victim, a 19-year-old man, was also taken to Temple Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the calf.

A woman who lives nearby says Shuler Park has been a hotspot of drug and gang activity over the past couple of years. Other residents told Action News that with the weather warming, violence usually heats up here as well.

The police investigation continues. They say they do not know if the two people who were shot were the intended targets. No names have been released.
