Local students among Google Doodle finalists

May 4, 2011

Google has to have one of the most recognizable corporate logos in the computer world.

So what is a Google Doodle? Well every so often the search engine giant has some fun with its six letter name.

You have no doubt seen them. Some Google Doodles recognize events like the first man in space fifty years ago, and others, people like Dr. Seuss's birthday.

A few years ago, the company decided to begin student competitions dubbed Doodle 4 Google, and the finalists for this year were named at school assembles.

The theme, "What I'd like to do someday", for instance, finalist Katie Krapf at Middletown High School in Delaware wants to be an Art Teacher.

"I just kind of made letters relevant to art education," said Katie. "The G is supposed to be me."

At Keith Valley Middle School in Horsham, Victoria Ta brought her skills as a graphic designer to her entry, down to the pens.

"It really shows I am the one who is drawing; I am the one who really wants to do it," said Victoria Ta.

The youngest finalist in our area is 8 year old Diya Cherian of Manor Elementary in Levittown. Her doodle focuses on kids pursuing their passions.

"The boy in the G is achieving his dream even though in a wheel chair," said Diya. "He is playing basketball. The girl in the G is playing the violin despite her being blind."

Google says out of 107,000 Doodle entries, it has named 40 finalists; three of them from our area. Now the public gets to vote.

Just go to Google.com forward slash doodle, the number 4 Google. http://www.google.com/doodle4google/

From there you can go to 'Vote Now' and select your favorites.

The Doodle Winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship.
