Philadelphia's Race for the Cure

PHILADELPHIA - May 8, 2011

It started with 6,000 survivors joining forces on the Art Museum steps to celebrate their victories Then, nearly 40,000 people began walking, running and rolling on the 5K course.

Many were on teams that were put together to remember a loved one touched by breast cancer.

It marks the 21st year the Susan. G. Komen Foundation has held the event; one of more than 100 nationwide but Philadelphia's is one of the largest.

Officials expect to raise millions of dollars to help pay for a wide variety of programs. Komen Philadelphia helps women in need get medical care - everything from a simple screening to a mammogram and cancer treatment.

Medical centers throughout the tri-state region receive grants. A quarter of the money will be sent to Komen's headquarters to fund research worldwide.

Survival rates are at an all-time high but much remains to be done.

Supporting the Race for the Cure is as easy as visiting their website and making a contribution. Or you can pledge support to a runner.
