Coffee drinkers may be less prone to aggressive breast cancer

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN; May 11, 2011

They've found that women who drink 5 or more cups of coffee a day seem to have a lower risk of developing an aggressive breast cancer called ER-negative cancer.

ER-negative means "estrogen receptor" negative, the type that doesn't respond to hormone treatment.

The researchers don't know yet which coffee types offer the best benefit. And they don't want women to start drinking, or increase consumption of coffee, thinking they can stave off cancer.

But they do say the coffee drinkers had a 33 to 57 per cent lower chance of ER-negative cancer than those who drank very little coffee.

They say the next step is to find out what chemicals in the coffee lower the cancer risk.
