Stretch vacation dollars with hotel freebies

"There are definitely categories where hotels are doing great things of giving freebies to their guests," explains Jennifer Garfinkel of hotel-review site Oyster.com.

Some hotels offer guests free food or drinks.

"Andaz hotels are great when it comes to freebies," Garfinkel says. "They're going to have a barista in the lobby, where you can get some free coffee in the morning. They'll also have some lobby snacks. They'll have some lemonade out."

The Hotel Rex in San Francisco has a free wine reception each night in its lobby bar. The Bryant Park Hotel in New York City has a free Happy Hour each night in its Cellar Bar.

The Laurel Inn in San Francisco has free lemonade and fresh-baked cookies each afternoon.

And many hotels offer free breakfast.

"If there's a free, really good breakfast, that can be saving you $20 a morning, a person on your trip," Garfinkel says.

And hotel freebies aren't limited to food and drinks. At the Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles, guests can use the spa for free. And the Palms Hotel in Miami offers free yoga classes.

The Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C., and the Library Hotel in New York both have free lending libraries.

And the W in San Francisco offers guests free loaner bicycles.

You can scour the web for hotel freebies. There's a whole section of them on Priceline. You can read the blog on Oyster.com, or you can simply ask when you make your reservation.

"If you're wondering what you're going to get out of this hotel, if there are any freebies, I always recommend calling the front desk," Garfinkel says. "You can talk to the concierge, and just ask them what they have on offer and what you'll get when you arrive at the hotel."
