Family reacts to amusement park accident

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - May 9, 2011

1-year-old Max Young's leg is in a splint after the amusement ride crash sent him, his grandmother, 56-year-old Mary Lorito, and aunt, 26-year-old Renee Lorito, to the hospital on Mother's Day.

Max's mother Michelle Young watched as the three boarded the Big Truck Ride at Storybook Land.

Everything seemed fine and then the truck the trio was in derailed slamming them into the pavement.

"I [said] it was like a movie; I was watching it in slow motion in my mind. It was horrible," Michelle said.

"It's not the Mother's Day you ever think of,you're sitting there with your mom, your son, your sister, it's a beautiful day, and then your world falls apart in front of you," Max's father David said.

Paramedics rushed the three to a local hospital. Renee Lorito and Mary Lorito suffered bumps and bruises. Max has a splint on his leg. Doctors didn't find a break, but he'll undergo more evaluation Tuesday.

"Right now, we're in the process of finding out what's wrong with his leg; the doctor is checking if there are any issues with the growth plate in his leg," David said.

State investigators are trying to determine what caused the derailment.

The ride has been shut down indefinitely and police say Storybook has been cooperating fully, but the Youngs haven't heard a word from the company. No explanation, no apology, and that has been frustrating for the family.

"We are just as curious to find out what caused this as everyone else," David said.

Action News tried to reach Storybook Land and its attorney, but were unable to reach them.
