Major road work begins in W. Conshohocken

WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.- May 9, 2011

On Monday, Route 23 (Front Street) was closed between Route 320 (Swedeland Road) and Matsonford Road for road and bridge construction.

PennDOT said crews will rebuild a thousand feet of Route 23 as part of a $4.8 million project to relocate and improve its intersection with Balligomingo Road.

Traffic will be detoured over Route 320 (Swedeland Road/Holstein Road/Trinity Road), Interstate 76 and Matsonford Road. Local access on Route 23 (Front Street) will be maintained up to the construction zone, PennDOT said, and Balligomingo Road will remain open to traffic during this first stage of construction.

Workers will then realign 600 feet of Balligomingo Road and move the road 400 feet to the west to create a "T" Intersection at Route 23.

Crews also will install traffic signals at the new intersection and add turn lanes on both roads.

The new intersection will be built just west of its current location to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety, PennDOT said.

Balligomingo Road is expected to be closed in the summer of 2012, and will remain closed for construction until May 2013, when the project is expected to be finished.

Route 23 is scheduled to reopen in July 2012.
