U. Del. police want jurisdiction over frat houses

NEWARK, Del. - May 10, 2011

University of Delaware police currently have authority over the school's Newark campus, but that's where their power ends. The Newark Police Department takes over after that.

University officials say the school's police force might be better equipped to handle minor infractions at five off-campus Greek houses, four fraternities and one sorority. In addition, a school official says that when practical the university would prefer to handle low-level offenses by students through an internal judicial system rather than in criminal court.

The plan could be discussed by the City Council as soon as next month, but Newark police, their union and some city officials have already expressed resistance to the plan.
