Police: Man who tortured ex-girlfriend surrenders

TRENTON, N.J. - May 11, 2011

Officials say 20-year-old Marquis Smith surrendered to Trenton police Wednesday evening. He will face charges for kidnapping, sexual assault, criminal restraint and related charges.

It began back on the afternoon of May 5th when, police say, the girl spotted Smith in the area of Greenwood Avenue and Chambers Street.

The girl, who had a restraining order against Smith, tried to get away, but Smith allegedly jumped out of the car and choked the girl until she blacked out.

The teen said she then woke up inside the attic of an unknown home.

Over four days, police say, Smith sexually assaulted her, beat her, and burned her with cigarettes.

Authorities also say that the girl was given nothing to eat and very little water to drink.

On the fourth day of her ordeal, police say the victim was able to escape through a window while Smith was out of the house.

The girl had had a fight with her mother the day she disappeared, and police say when that happens the girl would usually go to a friend's house. That's why, when she disappeared, her mother didn't call police.
