Home Consignment Market opens in Manayunk

MANAYUNK - June 17, 2011

Barbara Carocci is describing just one of the hundreds of items for sale at the newly opened Home Consignment Market at 4001 Main Street in Manayunk.

A gently used dining room table with two leafs is $599. A foosball table is $200. And aburgundy leather sectional sofa is $799.

Carocci and her business partner Linda Westphal opened the furniture consignment store in an old Manayunk warehouse, because they felt consumers were in the market for fine used furniture, in good condition, at prices way below retail.

The inventory may be used, but the space looks and feels like a high-end new furniture store.

"We have a very upscale environemnt here," Carocci says. "It's very inviting. We get a very positive response to that. And it's presented well and it's a very clean store. And we want to uphold that standard.

"A lot of them (the furniture items for sale) have come out designers' homes and were very, very expensive and exclusive pieces when they were new. And they're marked down to such considerable savings that they're irresistable" she continues.

The store splits the purchase price with the consigners 50/50. After 30 days, items are marked down 25%... After 60 days, the price is cut 50%.
