Rutgers University grads celebrate at commencement

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - May 15, 2011

An estimated crowd of about 28,000 people gathered Sunday morning at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway to watch more than 12,000 graduates receive their degrees. They also heard a keynote address from Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

The 245th anniversary commencement marked the first time since the 1960s that Rutgers held the event in its football stadium and invited all graduates to attend.

For the past several years, the commencement was held on Voorhees Mall in New Brunswick, and only graduate students and selected undergraduates were invited to attend due to limited space.

Collegiate and departmental convocations and receptions were also held later Sunday at other Rutgers campuses.
