The infant was rushed to Saint Christopher's Hospital around 6:00 p.m. Sunday, where doctors treated the child and discovered he had suffered head trauma. The child later died at the hospital.
The mother of the baby left the child with his godfather and godfather's partner at their Hunting Park apartment in the 4300 block of North 5th Street- something she had apparently done from time to time. Police have taken the couple in for questioning, but so far they are not facing any charges.
The baby's grandmother, Marybell Rodriquez, spoke to Action News Monday night.
"I don't understand why somebody would grab him and shake him to the point where they hurt him like they did; I don't understand," she said.
Neighbor Bianca Jones told Action News that she was on her way to the store on Sunday night when people at the home where the baby was screamed to her to call 9-1-1 because the baby had stopped breathing. The 9-1-1 operator helped Jones administer CPR to the child until an ambulance arrived.
The godfather's mother, Elizabeth Nieves, also rushed to help and rode in the ambulance to Saint Christopher's. She told Action News that doctors at the hospital took the child to "get a CTscan and from there they just took him for an operation, because supposedly he was... something was wrong with his head. He was bleeding inside."
Investigators are trying to determine what caused the child's head trauma, and when it occurred.
Although homicide detectives are investigating the case, they have not ruled the baby's death a homicide, and are emphasizing that they have not filed charges against anyone.
The mother of the baby also has two older children.
