Police: 7 vehicles set ablaze in Wynnefield

WYNNEFIELD - May 18, 2011

Authorities are searching for the arsonist or arsonists following the fires on a single block in the city's Wynnefield neighborhood early Wednesday.

Investigators say seven cars were set ablaze and five of them sustained significant damage.

Five cars were parked on the 1900 block of Georges Lane, one on the 1800 block and the last on Berks Street.

Oscar McCullough was one of the victims.

"It's a new vehicle. I've only made four payments," he said.

Now, he only has a broken windshield, melted tires and a burned-out engine compartment.

Neighbors here are stunned at this destruction in their community, but McCullough was trying to keep some perspective.

"As long as no lives were taken, then that's all that matters."

A fire marshal is investigating whether accelerants were used to ignite the fires.
