Police say the man who was hit by a car on Thursday night in New Castle County has been charged with shoplifting.

Sean Jones, 40, of New Castle, was hit around 9:15 p.m. in the 4400 block of Kirkwood Highway.

At the scene numerous bars of soap, bottles of shampoo and a cane were found.

As it turns out, police say Jones stole those items just minutes before he was struck.

Investigators say they tracked the items back to the Deals store at 4429 Kirkwood Highway.

Police say Jones stole the items just prior to the crash, though the store employees were unaware of the theft.

Jones was transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and admitted with numerous injuries. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

The driver of the car who hit Jones, Debra D. Massado, 58, of New Castle, was treated and released with minor injuries.

It also appears police are blaming Jones for the crash, charging him with two pedestrian violations.
