Businesses team up to help teens on prom night

GLENOLDEN, Pa. - May 20, 2011

Kate Fisher, a Senior at Interboro High, is getting an updo for her prom tonight... something she wasn't sure she'd be able to afford.

Kate tells us, " You have no idea. My hair was the top thing I was worried about. And it does cost so much - It's ridiculous. So I'm really, really happy."

Reflections Hair Salon, located in the Briarclliff Shopping Center in Glenolden, is joining forces with Alfred's of Philadelphia Florist next door, to help teenage girls and boys who otherwise, not be able to afford the expense of Prom night.

Today, the boys received complimentary bouquets for their dates and boutonnieres for themselves.

Interboro Senior Eric Shields says, "It means a lot. I'm sure it means more to my mom than anything. She's the one helping me out with my money."

Reflections stylist Beth Phillips explains, "We try to do anything that they really want. I mean, like the one girl that Sally's doing right now, she came in with extensions. So we're putting extra hair in just to make it look extra special."

It's the first year Christine Thomas, owner of Reflections Hair Salon, has helped these teens.

Thomas tells Action News, "We did their spray tans and we did their updos, their make-up and some of the jewelry to some of the girls."

Ellen Asalle, owner of Alfred's Florists, was the only vendor to join Christine this year. But both hope to make it an annual event.

"In the recession times, many children can't afford flowers - this is a great idea." said Asalle. When asked if this is something she would like to continue, Asalle replied, "Absolutely. We'd like to get more vendors involved."

It's a prom night special the teen won't soon forget, and Reflections and Alfreds will be going for a bigger and better effort next year!
