Phila. cab fares are up, parking kiosks on the blink

PHILADELPHIA - May 26, 2011

Cab drivers say they've been bleeding money.

Over the past 9 months, the cost of a gallon of gas in Philadelphia has gone up 50%, and now if you want to hail a taxi in the city, it'll cost you a dollar more.

"They deserve to make a living. They don't make very much and they work 12 hour shifts. I take a cab a lot. I think they deserve it," said Norman Master.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority says the surcharge will remain in effect for 90 days and then be reevaluated.

And if you have your own vehicle and want to park it, you better have a few bucks in your pocket.

The authority says kiosks around the city have not been accepting credit cards. It blames a technical problem. One minute a kiosk will accept, the next decline.

The kiosks have had a spotty record since being introduced.

On Walnut Street, one woman learned firsthand about the malfunction.

"It's not working. I tried it twice," said Twanda Campbell.

The Parking Authority hopes to have the problem corrected by Friday, and they are urging drivers to carry cash and change, if not, they need to walk to kiosk that will accept a credit card to get your slip.
