Free text tips for expectant moms

PHILADELPHIA - May 24, 2011

The tips come from government and non-profit health experts. The goal is to reach women who may not have access to regular pre-natal care such as women who are of low-income or on Medicaid.

Judy Meehan of Mother's Health Advocate said, "The text messages contain information on critical health topics like immunization, nutrition, oral health, safe sleep and a variety of other issues."

Examples include: "Your baby will be here soon, and it's time to get a car seat. The hospital won't let you leave by car or taxi without one."

Or, "Premature babies need extra help with breastfeeding. Even if your baby can't breastfeed at first, she can still be fed your pumped milk."

Women can sign up to receive the texts throughout their pregnancy and throughout the baby's first year.

To sign up or for more information, text "BABY" (or BEBE in Spanish) to 511411.
