Save on expensive clothes by renting

CENTER CITY - June 7, 2011

Reem Jawad of Center City loves to sport a NEW look for every occasion.

"Recently it was my 25th birthday," she said. "And I wanted to wear something special, but I didn't want to spend a ridiculous amount on something I would only be wearing once."

So she turned to renttherunway.com and found a dress that retailed for about $600.

"I rented it for $50," said Reem.

You can search for dresses a number of ways: designer, occasion, color, and availability.

One dress we found retails for more than a $1000. But Reem is renting it for $150.

For a good fit, Rent the Runway sends two sizes, and the rental price includes dry cleaning as well as pre-paid, pre-addressed return shipping packages!

And Rent the Runway lends designer accessories, too.

"Yeah, I have the earrings, the cuff and the dress. That's all I need," said Reem.

"I'm eight months pregnant and I'm expecting a baby boy," said Marjorie Voelker of Center City. "It's very difficult to find cute maternity clothes."

Especially maternity FORMAL wear. That's what Marjorie learned while shopping for a black-tie wedding.

"It can be really expensive," she said, "upwards of $200, $300. And you're only going to wear it once."

So we introduced Marjorie to Belly Bump Boutique. The store rents out maternity dresses for $39 and up for 7 days.

"It's great because then you can rent it, and it includes the shipping and dry cleaning afterward so you don't have to worry about it," said Marjorie.

WTGT, which stands for Wear Today, Gone Tomorrow, is another rental website. It targets a slightly younger audience. Dresses rent for as little as $25.
