Vandals target Delco church

CLIFTON HEIGHTS, Pa. - May 25, 2011

For 140 years St. Stephen's has been serving parishioners, and there had never been a problem with vandalism until now.

Tuesday afternoon vandals knocked down a heavy wrought iron railing, taking pieces of the slate steps with it.

Wilcy Moore is a parishioner, treasurer and volunteer groundskeeper at St. Stephen's.

"Sure I'm upset," he told Action News. "We've been trying to dress the front of the church up to make it look great."

Moore says whoever did this had to work at it.

"One person couldn't have done it," he said. "It would have taken a group of people rocking it back and forth."

Angela Moore is an active parishioner who says she can't believe no one knows who did the damage.

"I feel very upset about the fact that young people in this community are not being taught that to vandalize a church is sacrilegious," she said.

It happened between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, and the church is located on busy Baltimore Avenue. Police don't see this as a bias crime, but rather the work of trouble-making juveniles.

William House was bringing his little girl to the preschool graduation Wednesday when he learned of the vandalism.

"It's just terrible, especially at a church," he said. "I think there is a problem around here with the teenagers and parents not policing them very well."

Anyone with information about who may have done this is urged to call Clifton Heights Police at 610-623-3242.
