West Rockland Street in Germantown was a busy place Saturday as residents showed off their green thumbs in their First Grow this Block campaign.
"I think that a plant can go a long way. I think it's a conversation starter. I think that it's going to make our block a greener, more beautiful place," said Emaleigh Doley.
The idea for planting gardens on the block, no matter how small, was the brain child of Aine Doley, who has created a mini masterpiece of her own.
"We're looking at people being able to have fruit, veggies, herbs, perinials, shrubs and annuals," says Aine.
Aine says about 60% of the plants distributed on Satuday were grown by her from seeds, the rest have been donated by organizations like the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
"I really love this one, there are light pink and dark pink," says Grace Watkins.
Grace Watkins is no novice gardner. She already has rose bushes in her front yard. She's hoping the Grow this Block idea really catches on in her neighborhood.
"This is good because then you won't have all the weeds and bushes in front of the houses. This way we can have the whole block looking nice," said Grace.
Minnie Plez has the additions to her garden planned and got some help from her grandson.
"It will make the neighborhood look much better, and I think it will make everybody act a little better too," said Minnie.
"Giving back to the community is good," said Maurice Cole.
Block cleanups have been done in the past, but it is the first time the neighbors have come together to plant life into their community, and they are hoping to make it an annual event.
