FDA to review birth control pill safety

WASHINGTON, D.C.; June 1, 2011

The Food & Drug Administration says it will review the risks of pills with the hormone drospirenone.

Those include Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, and Safyral.

All birth control pills carry some risk of blood clots.

However, 2 recent studies in Britain found a 2 to 3-fold increase in the risk of clots in women taking pills with the hormone.

The FDA expects to complete the review by late summer.

Last week, European regulators said they were revising prescribing information to include the new safety findings.

Women taking any birth control pills should always watch for signs of clots, including leg or chest pain.
