Abington residents excited about sextuplets

ABINGTON, Pa. - June 2, 2011

The current condition of the babies remains unknown, but residents here are pulling for them.

"I don't even know what to say, that is just crazy exciting," said Jen Knapp.

Most people in Abington are excited about the town's new members, and they are hoping for the best.

"I just wish them the very best and that everybody is healthy," said Bill Cornwell.

And Dr. Jane McGowan says that could be a long process. She is not involved with the sextuplets, but heads the neonatal intensive care unit St. Christopher's Hospital.

She estimates the babies weigh about two pounds each, and like all premature babies, have critical needs.

"So we need to look for breathing problems, because the lungs are not fully developed," says Dr. McGowan.

And she says preemies usually need help with feeding done through an IV at first.

The goal is to get them breathing, eating and controlling their temperature on their own. She says it could take months and be a bumpy road.

"Even if they do well the first couple of days, we know it's a long road before we get to the point where we know they're doing well long term," Dr. McGowan said.

But doing well long term is what neighbors including a mother of four with twins hopes for the family.

"It's a lot of work, but God bless them all," said Aimee Miller.

A hospital spokesperson says they plan on releasing more information on Monday.
