The menhaden fish dump is forcing people out of the water Saturday and is drawing other fish and small sharks closer to the shore to feed on the dead fish. Beach safety officers say it's creating a smelly annoyance.
Beach Patrol Captain Kent Buckson says the headless, tailless fish were likely dumped or dropped from a commercial ship. They began washing ashore by the hundreds after 2 p.m. Cleanup crews were called to clear away the dead fish.
Buckson says other beaches will likely be affected as tides shift. He says he hops somebody is caught for dumping the fish.
Delaware's Division of Fish and Wildlife is investigating.
