Camden police officer stabbed in chest after concert

CAMDEN, N.J. - June 5, 2011

Police have arrested 28-year-old Ronald Belcher and 33-year-old Lamont Cloud, both of Camden. Belcher is charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses. Cloud is charged with obstructing justice and resisting arrest. Both are being held in the Camden County Jail.

Police say the officer, a 14-year veteran of the force, was at the intersection of Broadway and Martin Luther King Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. Saturday, directing traffic that was departing from a concert at the Susquehanna Bank Center. That's when a fight broke out a short distance away, outside of a late night food court on Broadway.

According to police, Belcher was among those involved in the fight.

The officer, who was in full uniform and wearing a reflective traffic vest, tried to break up the fight. He grabbed Belcher from behind, and that's when Belcher allegedly spun around and stabbed the officer in the left side of his chest.

The officer managed to draw his service weapon and Belcher dropped the knife. Another officer at the scene then took belcher into custody.

Responding officers rushed the injured police officer to Cooper University Hospital in a traffic cone truck. Upon his arrival at the hospital, the officer was rushed into surgery. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Out of consideration for the officer's family, police are not provided his name at this time.

Cloud was charged after allegedly being combative with police attempting to control the scene.

Investigators say it does not appear that Cloud, Belcher or the group they were fighting with, had attended the concert that night.
