Man, with gun, shot by police in North Phila.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - June 10, 2011

Officers were responding to a report of a domestic dispute involving an armed man at 15th and Indiana just after 11:00 p.m.

Police say, when they tried to stop the man, he opened fire.

Officers returned fire, hitting the man three times. Still, investigators say that wasn't enough to stop him right away.

"The suspect continued to flee, with the gun in his hand, south on the 2900 block of North Broad Street. The suspect collapsed on the sidewalk, on Broad Street, and that's where the suspect dropped his weapon," said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is hospitalized in critical condition.

No one else was hurt.

Meanwhile, as police were investigating, a driver plowed through the crime scene tape. That driver was taken into custody and is being tested for DUI.
