3 Catholic schools in suburban Philly to close

PHILADELPHIA - June 10, 2011

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Friday that St. Kevin parish elementary school in Springfield would close at the end of this academic year.

The announcement comes on the heels of news Tuesday that parish schools in Brookhaven and Lansdowne would not re-open. Officials say Our Lady of Charity and St. Philomena each had fewer than 100 students enrolled for next year.

Overall, church officials are closing 11 schools this year due to declining registration.

The archdiocese in February announced it would shutter four schools in Philadelphia and three in neighboring Bucks County at the end of the school year.
