Cherry Kool-Aid is a popular, fun drink for kids, but Kevin Gatto, owner of Verde Salon in Collingswood, New Jersey, said it can also be used to temporarily boost color on a red head or brunette.

"It's really just a freshen-up for the weekend, get you through the next couple of days and as you shampoo it, it will come right back out," said Kevin.

Mix the Kool-Aid powder with a small amount of warm water, 4-6 ounces of cranberry juice and 5 pumps shampoo. Apply the mixture to newly shampooed hair, and let it sit for 5 minutes, rinse, and condition then blow dry.

Kevin loved the result!

"It's almost like we did a glaze here in the salon I'm really that impressed by it," he said.

Flour isn't just for baking anymore.

"If you don't have a professional dry shampoo to use at home if you have some flour it will help take away some of those oils," Kevin said.

Sprinkle a very small amount of flour at the scalp, dab with a makeup brush, and then work into hair with your fingers. The oils are gone and you get instant volume.

Spray starch can also double as a volumizer. Spray at roots, and then blow dry.

"What's great about the spray starch is it gives a lot of extra hold as well," Kevin said.

Having trouble fighting frizz? Grab sunscreen!

"When you apply on your face just work it right through your hair. You can do it wet or dry," he said.

For an itchy, dry scalp, crush up some ibuprofen and mix with shampoo. Then apply directly to scalp using a colorist's brush.

"You're going to use that brush to really work that mixture in," he explained.

Let that sit for about 2 minutes, then shampoo out.

And pesky goop from hair extensions can easily be removed using olive oil!

"You see the oil is helping take that last little bit of glue out," he said.

Another trick, spray a little bit of hairspray onto a soft toothbrush and use that to tease your hair or tame little flyaway's along your hairline.

Blondes have long used lemon juice to brighten their highlights when out in the sun. But a combination of lemon and orange juices delivers the most natural looking results. The mix creates a warmer, more golden color.

If hair color bothers your skin and scalp ask your colorist (of add yourself if coloring at home) to add one packet of Sweet 'N Low to the coloring solution. The acids in the sugar substitute help neutralize the pH level.

On rare occasions, you can remove product buildup from your hair by washing with Palmolive dish soap. It's super clarifying but remember to follow up with a hydrating deep conditioner.

If you have some damaged ends to your hair you can create a protein treatment by dissolving a packet of clear gelatin in hot water. Massage the solution through your hair, leave on for 30 minutes and then rinse.

In a pinch lip balm can double as hair wax to add definition and get rid of hairline frizz.

And save your old wine corks and use those as rollers for a sexy beach wave. Roll the ends of the hair with the corks, secure with hair pins, had heat from a hair dryer, let cool and remove.
