Bomb squad blows up explosive found under Pa. lot

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - June 16, 2011

Authorities evacuated the shopping center in Northampton County on Wednesday after a construction crew laying drainage pipe discovered the device. A bomb squad safely blew it up about six hours later.

Nancy Run Fire Chief Jamie Hauze said the explosive appeared to be a discarded blasting cap. Fire crews say it may date back to when the shopping center was built in the late 1970s.

A Bethlehem Fire Department bomb technician says the construction crew was fortunate to not accidentally set it off.
