Lining up for 10-cent gas in South Jersey

DELRAN, N.J. - June 17, 2011

If you drive a vehicle with an 18-gallon tank, it normally costs about $65 or $70 to fill. This morning at a Sunoco station in Delran, it cost $1.80.

"$1.80? Oh my God, I can't believe this," said Mary Harris of Delran, N.J. as the attendant announced how much she owed.

Harris was one of the first 100 motorists to line up to buy gas at this Delran Sunoco station. The price: 10 cents a gallon.

"Runs about $55 to fill it up," said John Thomas of Willingboro, N.J. of his Kia Sedona.

"One dollar forty cents," said the gas station attendant.

"Oh, that's okay with me," said Thomas laughing. "I like that."

This gas promotion was the brainchild of Spark Energy of Houston. It's an electricity provider relatively new to the area, trying to attract customers from PSE&G. Drivers had to show a coupon downloaded from Spark's Facebook page.

"The ten cents a gallon ties in nicely to the fact that we can save consumers 10% off their PSE&G rates," said Spark Energy President Philip Tonge.

"Do you think you might actually use Spark Energy instead of PSE&G?" David Brown of Pennsauken, N.J. was asked. "We're looking into it," he replied.

Whether or not these drivers will switch remains to be seen. But ten cents a gallon for gasoline sure got their attention today. Valerie Leon of Willingboro, N.J. was first in line.

"I got here about 7:30 or 7:40 a.m.," she said, for a 10:00 a.m. start. "Ten cent a gallon gas, you just can't pass it up."

"Have you ever paid ten cents a gallon for gas," Adina Cruz of Moorestown, N.J. was asked. "No, I wasn't driving back then," she replied laughing.

We checked, and the earliest record we could find of gas prices was from 1912. Gasoline then cost about 18 cents a gallon.
