Consumer Reports' Bernie Deitrick tested the Shout Color Catcher along with the Carbona Color and Dirt Grabber. It claims you can "Wash mixed colors with confidence!"
Deitrick washed red polo shirts with white test cloths to see how well the products work. When washed with both products, the red shirts bled heavily and the test cloths absorbed much of the dye, causing them to turn pink.
"Your best bet is to separate your colors from your light colors and if you think something is going to bleed, wash it separately," said Deitrick.
Carbona's package cautions that "new colored clothing should always be washed separately the first few times." They also stand by their product, adding that it does help colors stay clear and bright over time.
SC Johnson, the maker of the Shout Color Catcher, also says it stands by its product, which it says is effective when used according to package directions.
The package offers tips and precautions as well. They suggest using two or three sheets for maximum effectiveness, and to always wash certain large dark-colored items separately.
Consumer Reports also adds that to keep colors from bleeding, it helps to wash your clothes in cold water.
