Top Walt Disney executive in Fla. retires

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - June 23, 2011

Al Weiss announced his retirement Wednesday in a letter to employees. It's effective immediately.

Weiss started working for the company as an 18-year-old hourly laborer in the Magic Kingdom. He rose to become the president of worldwide operations for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Between 1994 and 2005, Weiss was president of Walt Disney World, and for many, the human face of Disney in Orlando.

There are no immediate plans to directly replace Weiss.

Disney Parks chairman Tom Staggs says he will detail a new operations structure for Disney's parks in coming weeks.
