The Pierogie Kitchen

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -June 28, 2011

You head to Roxborough, where The Pierogie Kitchen dishes up the namesake dish and many more favorites, all from old family recipes.

Owner Marie Thorpe started out selling ice cream, then added hot lunches.

When her grandmother's pierogies pushed everything else off the menu, it was time to change the name of the store. That was more than ten years ago.

Today, Thorpe offers traditional flavors like potato, potato-cheddar, and sauerkraut. But she also makes creative, unique varieties like Philly Cheese Steak, Buffalo Bleu Chicken and even dessert flavors like blueberry and chocolate ganache. That one also forms the basis for the shop's ice cream sundae...yes, served on a foundation of pierogies.

There are also sandwiches called "stackers", each with its own variety of pierogies added inside the bread. And there are a few non-pierogie choices like kielbasa and kraut, stuffed cabbage, and homemade soups, too.

Most pierogies are available frozen by the dozen. They're pre-boiled, so you just heat them in a skillet to serve. You can also get them hot, ready-to-eat. But there's really no place to sit and eat unless you're lucky enough to get one of two little tables out on the sidewalk.

Most customers buy their lunches to go.

The shop is located at 648 Roxborough Avenue in Roxborough, open weekdays 10:00am to 6:00pm and 10 to 5 on Saturdays, closed Sundays.

Party trays are available for pickup and they also deliver catering orders but do not serve food off the premises. For more information, phone 215-483-5301, or visit their website, The Pierogie Kitchen.
