Community garage sale raises money for fire victims

UPPER MORELAND, Pa. - July 9, 2011

"It's just heartbreaking knowing that you could be standing outside watching your house go up in flames," said Angie Cannon.

Angie Cannon and other friends of the Cummins family didn't wait to act. They organized a community garage sale in Hatboro to help the Upper Moreland family of five whose home is now a total loss.

Strangers and friends alike flocked to help with the image of the burned out shell still haunting them.

"I think we stopped breathing for a full ten minutes because we were in utter shock," said John Zeballos.

Early Tuesday morning police say a car veered off Byberry Road and struck the Cummin's parked minivan, rupturing the gas tank. The minivan launched into the home and sparked the inferno.

Jim and Jill Cummins and their three young sons quickly evacuated with just their dog and the clothes on their back.

The driver and passenger perished in the crash.

Family friends called the entire accident tragic on many levels, saying that the Cummins still have the most important thing, each other.

"There are a lot of things in their lives that's going to need replacement. The good news is, none of them lost their lives," said Matt Ansbro.

From boats to books, the sale was a success. Folks donated items and snapped them up, leaving extra money when they could.

"Here at the garage sale, something be $2.00, they'll give $20," said Cannon. "It's just a wonderful thing."

If you couldn't make the garage sales, there are other ways to give. Please contact one of the people listed below and arrangements will be made.

Donations of cash, checks or gift cards will also be accepted at the UMSD Administration Building Monday through Thursday between 7:30pm to 4:30pm. The building is closed on Friday's during the summer.
