According to police, witnesses watched the SUV plunge into the canal in the Middletown area, about 1 mile east of the Maryland line Saturday afternoon.
Police responded and found the vehicle more than two hours later, about 100 feet from where it entered the canal. The body of a 62-year-old man was recovered and has been turned over to the Delaware Medical Examiner.
The incident remains under investigation. Police say they don't yet know why the vehicle went into the water.
