The effort includes developing a new intelligence unit with the FBI and working with detectives from the federal Transportation Security Administration.
NJ Transit Police Chief Christopher Trucillo told the Asbury Park Press the agency increased patrols with K-9 units and Emergency Services Units with the capability to detect radiological and chemical agents after the death of Osama bin Laden revealed al-Qaida was plotting to target U.S. rail systems.
All 11,000 NJ Transit employees are receiving security awareness training. The agency also is working with 5,000 businesses located near train stations to report suspicious activity.
