But all he wanted to do was rap - to an audience in the heart of New York City.
And he sure got a crowd - onlookers who packed the sidewalks below, some clicking photos, others cheering.
Police set up an inflatable cushion under the pole at 44th Street and Seventh Avenue for fear he would jump.
Finally, the man agreed to come down a ladder police hoisted from the top of an NYPD emergency truck.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
Authorities did not release his name, pending possible charges.
