Police at homicide scene shoot knife-wielding woman

PHILADELPHIA - July 1, 2011

North Judson Street in North Philadelphia was the setting for not one, but two shootings.

It all began around 5:00 p.m.

Police say a man in his 20's was shot nine times in the groin area and thighs.

Medics rushed the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.

At around 6:10 p.m., as authorities were investigating the shooting scene, neighbors alerted police about a woman with a steak knife trying to stab her boyfriend.

"She was trying to stab the dude she was arguing with," witness Christopher Madison said.

Police say officers ordered the 48-year-old woman several times to put down the knife, but she refused.

"After several more orders for her to drop the knife, she then turns toward the police, lunged towards the officer and a 39th district officer discharged one time striking the female in the chest," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The woman, described to be in her 40's, was rushed to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.
