3 killed, 4 hurt in Garden State Parkway crash

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. - July 5, 2011

Four others - the brothers' parents, sister and a friend - were badly hurt, New Jersey State Police said. The accident happened at about 5 a.m. in the northbound express lane near Middletown Township.

State police spokesman Sgt. Julian Castellanos said the driver lost control of his Ford Expedition and struck the right guardrail. The SUV then overturned at least twice, ejecting three men and two women from the back seat and onto the highway.

State police told the Daily News of New York that the driver was Dimitrios Iliopoulos, 54, who owns a New Jersey diner. Killed were his sons, Chrystoph and Hlimas "Elias" Iliopoulos, ages 14 and 18, and Eric Colligan, 15, a neighbor and friend of the family.

Dimitrios Iliopoulos was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune along with his wife, Stavroula Iliopoulos, 51, and daughter, Fotiny Iliopoulos, 20. They were all listed in critical condition. Fotiny Iliopoulos' fiance, Vincent Whiteaker, 25, also of Staten Island, was treated and released.

Whiteaker's grandfather, Robert Whiteaker, told the Daily News that the group was returning from an all-night gambling trip to Atlantic City. He said his grandson said a car cut them off and Dimitrios Iliopoulos lost control of his vehicle.

All northbound local and express lanes along a roughly 10-mile stretch of the parkway were closed for nearly five hours as emergency services crews worked to aid the injured and clear the accident scene. All lanes were reopened shortly before 10 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
