Celebrating the fourth on the slopes

KEYSTONE, Colo. (AP) - July 5, 2011

About 4,000 skiers and snowboarders were able to get in one last day on the slopes at Colorado's Arapahoe Basin ski resort. A spokeswoman says this is the latest that the resort has closed since 1997, when it kept running until August 10th.

It usually stays open until early June.

A spokeswoman at the Snowbird resort in Utah says this was just the third time the resort has been open on Independence Day. A wet winter brought a record snowfall of 783 inches to Snowbird this year.

Not all of the skiers at Snowbird were dressed for winter. The spokeswoman tells a TV station that some people sported swimsuits -- and an American flag.
