The Borough of Brooklawn is planning to create a monument that will incorporate a collection of artifacts from the three 9-11 disaster sites.
The items made their historic arrival in Brooklawn Wednesday afternoon.
The procession of police, fire and EMS vehicles made their way into the Borough of Brooklawn around 1:00pm after departing from JFK Airport Wednesday morning.
The main attraction is a 16 foot, eight and a half ton steel beam from the World Trade Center disaster site, along with soil from the crash site of Flight 93 in Stonycreek near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and limestone from the Pentagon tragedy in Washington, D.C.
Brooklawn Mayor, Teri Branella asked the dozens of people who gathered to show their respects for what the items represented.
"I would ask that everybody would just bow their heads for a moment of silence," said Mayor Branella.
Brooklawn police captain, Steven Saymon was praised for organizing the effort.
He was a responder to the World Trade Center bombing almost a decade ago.
"The flag that is draping this piece of steel behind us was just this past Saturday, flown above Independence Hall in Philadelphia," said Captain Saymon.
"It is probably the only monument that we're talking about dedicating on September 11th that is going to encompass all three sites," explained Ted Howarth of the American Legion.
The monument will be placed in Brooklawn Memorial Park, but residents were allowed to pray over and touch the artifacts on Wednesday.
"It means so much," said Leah Barcklow. "Our nation should get together not just disasters like what happened, but for every day."
The steel beam, soil and limestone have been placed in storage until work begins on the construction of the memorial.
It will be dedicated on Patriots Day in Brooklawn Memorial Park this September 11th.
