Women weren't allowed in the military in the 1860s -- but more than 200 of them posed as male soldiers to fight in the War Between the States.
And according to some who pursue the Civil War hobby today, women in uniform aren't always welcome at privately run re-enactments. So, some of the women go to great lengths to avoid being detected.
Joyce Henry of Virginia impersonates Lt. Harry T. Buford, a real-life Confederate soldier. To make it look real, she got an FBI expert to teach her to apply facial hair.
And it's appropriate that she's impersonating Buford -- since the real Buford was really a woman. He was invented by a woman from New Orleans who, according to her autobiography, fought as a man in a series of Civil War battles.
