Forty-two-year-old Edward Pettersen was sentenced Thursday in Pike County Court to 21 1/2 to 70 years in prison. District Attorney Ray Tonkin sought the long prison term, citing the brutality of the October 2009 assault and a prior protection from abuse order.
Authorities say Pettersen entered the house in Delaware Township - about 90 miles northeast of Philadelphia - through a crawl space in the middle of the night.
The Pocono Record reports police say he hit his wife in the head with a hammer, stabbed her and pressed a pillow over her face. Authorities say he took her to the hospital after she agreed to say another person attacked them.
