DA probes alleged misuse of Tasers by Pa. officers

READING, Pa. - July 8, 2011

The Reading Eagle reports West Reading sergeants Matthew R. Beighley and Ryan Phillips were suspended with pay April 26 and returned to duty Thursday. District Attorney John Adams says county detectives are now investigating.

An attorney representing another borough officer says Beighley approached his client from behind and stunned him in the buttocks at borough hall. Authorities say that during a Halloween party Phillips stunned Beighley and a woman, and Beighley allegedly stunned another officer and a woman at the same party.

Joseph Brown, president of the Berks County Fraternal Order of Police, says the incidents are embarrassing. Messages left for Beighley and Phillips were not immediately returned.
